The Application Process

We have helped many people go through the process of obtaining a marijuana handler card in Alaska. The key to having a smooth application process is to FOLLOW DIRECTIONS! You are dealing with the state government in a relatively new industry and there are a lot of rules.

We will outline the process for you in the best order we have found to do this.

  1. The first thing you need to do is click here and leave the browser tab open. Additionally, print out the instructions to make the process efficient.
  2. Next is your myAlaska account. If you already have one, you can move on to next step in the application process which is getting your background check. If you need to set-up a myAlaska account, click here.
  3. You need to receive a name-based background check in the state of Alaska:

    • Go to dps.alaska.gov
    • Near the top of the DPS homepage are some drop down menus that go across the top of the page
    • Put your cursor over the one that says “I WANT TO”
Choose > “GET A BACKGROUND CHECK”
    • On the next page, near the middle of the page, over on the right, is a section for forms
    • Choose the very first one. It’s titled “CRIMINAL JUSTICE INFORMATION FROM RECORD SUBJECT”
      • This will include criminal justice information from the State of Alaska only

A few things about the form

    • It’s two pages but we never use the second page, so you don’t need to print it out
    • For a marijuana handlers card, check the second box for an “ANY PERSON FOR ANY PURPOSE” report
      • THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ON THIS FORM is at the bottom of the first page. It’s a box that says “UNSWORN FALSIFICATION STATEMENT”. You need to sign and date this or the whole process will take a lot longer as it will just be mailed back to you for you to do this.
    • “ONCE WE RECEIVE YOUR FORM IN THE MAIL, ALONG WITH $20.00 in the form of cash, check or money order, we will process your request within a day or two.”

The results may be mailed or faxed but not both unless you purchase an extra copy for $5.00 requested at the same time as the original report. Additional reports requested at a later date are $20.00.

If you have questions about how the process works or how to fill out the form, you can call the Records and Identification office in Anchorage at 907-269-5767.

  4. Now go back to your instructions open in your browser tab
  5. Go to page 3 and follow the “Online Application Instructions”
    1. you will see why you created the myAlaska account first
  6. This next step involves going back to the instructions open in your browser tab and go to page 2
    1. follow all of these instructions and pay attention to step 2
      1. Complete a Marijuana Control Board approval Marijuana Handler Permit Education Course
      2. click on the link provided and choose your course
  7. It is a good idea to download this document – your cover letter – by clicking here
    1. this is important when you mail in your paperwork
    2. you also can deliver in person in you will be living / working in Anchorage or Fairbanks
    3. either way, it’s a good idea to have the cover letter
  8. The fee for your handler card is $50, and if you are mailing in your paperwork, you have to provide your own passport photo

The below video was produced by the state of Alaska and does a good job of explaining the process.
